Imagine yourself on a path where you can explore life's "big questions" through art, music, ritual, and a variety of other spiritual practices. That is the very journey our UU children and youth will embark on this year through the RE theme, "Our Spiritual Journeys." The theme is rooted in the UU principles “a free and responsible search for truth and meaning†and “acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth.†It emphasizes the UU source “direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and openness to the forces that create and uphold life.†The classes will consider in an age-appropriate manner life's big questions such as creation, God, what gives meaning to our lives, birth and death. Our goal is to help the children think about what they believe while learning to respect others’ beliefs. We will use music, art, prayer, meditation and ritual to explore spiritual feelings. Recognizing that spirituality is not limited to any one particular set of beliefs, we will give the children the opportunity to discover for themselves what makes them feel spiritual and to appreciate that each person is free to choose a spiritual path that brings meaning to his/her life. The curriculum, “Treasure Huntingâ€, will give the 4-7 year old class a concrete way to involve children in the excitement of the search for the meaning of life. The 8-11 year old class will use the curriculum “A Stepping-Stone Year†to explore life’s great mysteries. The junior high class will use art as a medium to explore spirituality using the curriculum “You the Creator.†The teen class will use “On the Path†to explore the nature and meaning of spirituality in their lives.
