DRE Letter to Members
Written by Shannon Price

Dear Fellowship Member,

The DRE Search Committee, having carefully considered all applicants for our part-time DRE position, is pleased to announce that we have a candidate. The Committee received five applications and spent many hours together discussing each. We interviewed several candidates, concentrating on their enthusiasm and willingness to engage liberal religious education concepts and methods, as well as their availability to attend training events. We discussed the AUUF Long Range Plan for Religious Education with each candidate and evaluated the potential for
the candidate to implement the plan.

The candidate that we have recommended to the AUUF Board is Terri Albrecht-Schmitt. Terri has been unanimously approved by the Board, who is responsible for hiring and dismissal, and the next step is a vote of affirmation by the members of the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, following the opportunity to “Meet and Greet” the
candidate on Saturday 7 June, 2008.

In recommending Terri, the Search Committee recognized that she has a wide range of experiences with the kind of “faith in action” commitment that we want to instill in our youth. She has been an active member of the Alliance for Peace and Justice and a Habitat for Humanity volunteer. Her volunteer work developing programs for children at the Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve and at the Southeastern Raptor Rehabilitation Center demonstrates a tremendous love for nature and
wildlife, which she enjoys sharing with others.

Terri expresses her convictions with action while demonstrating a commitment to diversity. She recognizes that there are many different spiritual paths and has a deep respect for the goals of the AUUF RE Program. She has experience directing volunteers, organizing events, and working with parents and children. We believe that she will work
well with the RE Committee, the Minister, the RE teachers and the parents of the Fellowship to uphold the high standards of the current RE program and to implement the RE Long Range Plan.

You are invited to an informal “Meet and Greet” celebration for Terri at the Fellowship on Saturday, the 7th of June, 2008 from 4:00pm until 5:30. On Sunday, 8th of June (potluck Sunday), you will be able to vote on the candidate. The Search Committee will be happy to answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to attend the Meet and Greet event, please submit your vote via mail to the following address:

The Oxfam Hunger Banquet was held at the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Wednesday evening. 85 people attended; the event raised $515 for Oxfam America and 112.5 pounds of canned items for our local East Alabama Food Bank. This purpose of this page is to round up the results and links to the media coverage of the event to help with future planning.

Opinion piece in OA News

Thanks to EVERYONE who played a roll in making this event so very successful. Each Religious Education class took responsibility for some aspect of the event. The youngest group (preK) made some of the artwork for the walls. The K-3 group created informational posters for the walls. The Middle School class served the rice to the lower income group and shared stories of representative individuals in the different income groups. The Jr. High Group also shared stories. They also made the beans and served the rice and beans during the event. The High School Group served as MC for the event and served the group at the high income table.

Hunger Banquet
Written by Administrator

Only 15 percent of the world's population can eat whenever they are hungry, and also whatever they want! Meanwhile, half the people in the world struggle every day to meet their family’s basic needs.

On Wednesday, January 23, problems of poverty and hunger will come alive in an unforgettable way at the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hunger Banquet. The event is hosted by the AUUF Religious Education Program for Children and Youth which would like to invite you to participate in this event.

Hunger is a problem that affects every part of the world. Our goal is to raise awareness and to raise money. Your donation of $5 and a can of food will benefit our local East Alabama Food Bank and Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization that is working in more than 120 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty.

The Banquet begins at 6 pm on Wednesday, January 23, in the AUUF sanctuary at 450 East Thach Street in Auburn. The event will last about an hour and a half. Hamilton's Restaurant, Amsterdam Cafe, and The Barbecue House have generously donated entrees for the dinner. We are pleased that Martha Faupel, Director of the Food Bank, will offer a few words about hunger issues close to home.

We hope you will plan to attend and please feel free to bring someone with you.

Sincerely,

Claire Crutchley Emily Livant
