Committee on Ministry
Written by Darrell Crutchley
Monday, 19 May 2008 13:55
Many UU congregations have a committee on ministry (COM) to focus on all aspects of the congregation's ministry, including professional leadership, music, social justice, religious education, and pastoral care. The purpose of the COM is to strengthen the quality of ministry within a congregation. The AUUF COM is appointed by the Board to work with the minister and Fellowship members to care for and strengthen the overall community. Because ministry is increasingly seen as a shared effort and not the sole responsibility of the professional or ordained minister, the COM strengthens the quality of ministry in the Fellowship.

One of the primary goals of the AUUF's COM is to encourage direct and constructive communication among our members, minister, and staff. Anyone with concerns about the health of our ministry and community is encouraged to contact a member of the COM. The AUUF COM meets monthly. It is currently working on a ministerial assessment/evaluation instrument, the covenant document, and the charge from the Board to develop a method or policy for dealing with dangerous & disruptive behaviors & conflict mediation within the Fellowship.

If you have questions or concerns, contact a COM member: Robert Zabawa, Chair; Samera Baird, Karen St.Clair, and Darrell Crutchley.

Business Meeting Letter

Dear AUUF Member,

Each spring the members of the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship devote one Sunday service to the business of our community.  We gather to approve the budget for the upcoming year and to elect our lay leaders.  This is important work as a vibrant faith community must attend to its finances and other business matters.  This year our Business Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, May 25th and will commence after we sing the children out to play.  Our agenda includes a financial report, the minister’s report, the president’s report, and the annual election.  We will vote on the 2008-2009 budget and the election of board members and committee chairs.  More information on the items requiring a vote is provided below.

Committees are what make our Fellowship run. We encourage members and friends to find their niche, the job that they are comfortable with, and discover the satisfaction of helping out and the joy of being part of AUUF.

Here are brief descriptions of the work of our committees:

  • The Aesthetics Committee works to benefit the overall appearance of the Fellowship, RE Building and grounds; supports programs and services with decorations, oversees the Fellowship art collection.
  • The Buildings and Grounds Committee maintain church facilities, including buildings and grounds; the Chair is a resource person, facilitator; and supervisor for new projects, improvements and repairs.
  • The Communications Committee disseminates information about the AUUF both within the Fellowship and to the larger community.
  • The Congregational Support Committee identifies and responds to the special needs of individuals within the Fellowship during times of transition or crisis, working in conjunction with the Minister.
  • The Denominational Concerns Committee keeps the Fellowship posted regarding pertinent events happening at the MidSouth District Level and the Unitarian Universalist Association.
  • The Green Sanctuary Committee works to help the Fellowship and members integrate into our everyday living the Seventh Principle and our role as stewards of this earth.
  • The Membership Committee is responsible for welcoming visitors, encouraging membership by helping newcomers to orient to the AUUF Community, and recognizing membership in the AUUF.
  • The Music Committee facilitates selection, organization, and performance of music for regular and special services of the Fellowship.
  • The Nominating Committee recruits members to serve as officers and trustees of the Board and as Committee Chairs of AUUF.
  • The Religious Education Committee plans and implements a religious education (RE) program for youth in age groups from preschool (age 3-5 years) through high school.
  • The Social Action Committee connects the AUUF to social issues and activities in the local and statewide community through interaction with affiliate organizations, representation in activities, and organizing events.
  • The Sunday Services Committee works in concert with the minister and lay leaders to plan and present services on Sunday mornings.
  • The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee organizes events such as Guest at Your Table fund raiser in November and UNICEF fund raising in December.
  • The Committee on Ministry serves as a support for the Minister and as a communication channel between the Minister and the congregation.
